Illegal Immigration: The Problem of Hearts vs Logic

Liberals leave logic at door with heartfelt justifications for not deporting illegal immigrants.

One of the problems in America today is the issue of illegal immigration. As time has gone by, a growing polarization between two types of Americans and their ideologies regarding illegal immigration have emerged. The first group of people mainly conservative Americans share the belief that there are over 12 million illegal aliensliving in the United States that contribute to crime and are an economic burden on America. The second group of people tend to believe a leftist/liberal ideology, as opposed to classic liberalism, ideology belief that there are over 12 million undocumented immigrantsliving in America. The liberals refuse to use the label illegal immigrant because of their belief that the term disenfranchises millions of people and leads to systemic racism and xenophobia. It is the classic hearts versus logic debate.

Damaging assumptions and talking points about illegal aliens are often espoused by the liberals on why illegals should be allowed to come across the border illegally. For instance, there is a common statement used by the liberals that “Most of these people are just coming here for work and a better life.” This is an inaccurate statement to make. First of all, who are “these people”? Second, how can an individual speak for the motivations and actions of over 12 million undocumented illegal immigrants.

The liberal feel good argument, which is not a logical argument at all, does not help to fix the problem of illegal immigration, but instead, enables it. It sends a message of, ‘Hey come over to this country. Do not worry about going through the process legally to become a citizen. You are wanted here, you will be loved, and we will make sure you are comfortable and are taken care of.’. That ideology violates the right of self-determination for the natives and legal immigrants of the United States of America. Now let’s take a look at the more conservative and logical view of illegal immigration.

When I talk about conservative views let me identify who I’m talking about. I’m not talking about rednecks with a race motivated hatred for illegal immigrants. A type of, “Go back to Mexico you,” followed by a racial slur. Nor am I talking about the conservative who believes in American exceptionalism with the idea that America is inherently better than any other nation. No, the conservatives that I am talking about care about the numbers. They look at rates of crime, unemployment, and the economic burden imposed upon America by illegal immigration.

Let’s take a look at a few examples starting with crime. The New York Post, a news organization known for its left leaning bias, published an article stating that about 4.5 million illegal immigrants drive illegally, without a license, insurance, or in some cases are even driving without being able to read the traffic signs. That is over 20% of illegal immigrants committing crime. But it gets much worse.

A much darker statistic is one that the Center for Immigration studies published. Around 23% of illegal aliens found to be convicted of violent crimes prominently including, drug offences, assault, and sexual assault. Of those illegal aliens that have been prosecuted it has inflicted “thousands to millions in cost per alien on the system”. This statistic alone shows the factual flaw of the feel good statement that undocumented workers are mainly just coming here for a better life and work. Now let us take a look at the economic burden of illegal immigration on Americans.

FAIR’s study of the cost of illegal immigration. FAIR’s Analysis

FAIR (Federation for American Immigration Reform) added up the Federal Cost in addition to state and local cost of illegal immigrations and that total for year 2000 is $134,863,455,364. Total tax contributions of illegal aliens total out at $18,968,857,700 leaving a whopping $115,894,597,664 that Americans are paying for illegal immigrants. This statistic alone should show that there is a financial burden on Americans which is simply unjust, and not fair. All of these statistics and facts should illuminate the reader to the problems of illegal immigration. How long will it take before extreme reform happens? It won’t be long until a violent culture clash will erupt if nothing changes in our system.
